Hats (or head armour) are purely cosmetic and provide no stat bonuses. Unlike other Equipment, Hats aren't blood-bound and will be dropped on death. Some are exclusively sold for 
Copper Coins, 
Silver Coins or 
Goldsun Coins at a Goods Vendor.
However, most can be found in Regular / Golden Chests at a 7.5% chance, at a 10% chance in Carriages, or through Fishing. The type of hat found depends on the region in which it is looted.
