Gems are crafting resources used for Weapon smithing, Jewelcrafting, Magic Sources and Gem Cutting.
Obtaining gems is fairly common and are primarily obtained from mining Gem Veins, but also drop from defeating Enemies and V Blood Carriers, fishing, looting chests and Carriages or salvaging Jewels. They can also be purchased from specific Gem Vendors.
Gems come in three distinctive qualities: Crude, Regular and Flawless. Crude gems can be found in Farbane Woods and the Hallowed Mountains. Regular gems are located at Gloomrot South, Ruins of Mortium, Cursed Forest and Dunley Farmlands, especially at Bedrock Pass. Flawless gems are common in Gloomrot North, Oakveil Woodlands and Silverlight Hills, especially at both Harpy Nests.
Their quality can be upgraded using the 
Gem Cutting Table or broken into (4/16/64) 
Gem Dust based on quality using a 
Grinder.
Each gem type is are used to craft jewels and jewelry associated with a specific magic school matching its color, and a selection of weapons:
Rubies are used to craft Blood Magic items, Axes, Pistols and Claws.
Amethysts are used to craft Chaos Magic items, Slashers, Longbows and Daggers.
Emeralds are used to craft Unholy Magic items and Spears.
Miststones are used to craft Illusion Magic items, Reapers and Whips.
Sapphires are used to craft Frost Magic items, Swords, Greatswords and Twinblades.
Topazes are used to craft Storm Magic items, Maces and Crossbows.
