Tristan the Vampire Hunter is a Level 44 V Blood Carrier.

Attacks

  • Flaming strike - He coats his sword with fire and then swipes forward in an overhead swing after a short delay. This attack lights the player on fire if it hits them.
  • Icy swing - He coats his sword with ice and then immediately sweeps it in a wide arc in front of him that inflicts Chill. He often uses this as a follow-up attack after Flaming strike.
  • Lunge - He leaps forward while thrusting his sword. This attack briefly snares the player if it hits them, but can be blocked by counter or shield abilities.
  • Flaming Crossbow - He draws his crossbow and fires a flaming bolt at the player. If the bolt hits the player, a minion, or the environment it will detonate and light a large area of the ground on fire. If blocked by a shield spell or countered, the bolt will disappear without leaving a flame patch.
  • Fire Bombs - He throws a fire bomb in the air which explodes into 5 separate bombs, lighting the ground on fire for several seconds when they land. He will often follow up this attack by firing his crossbow immediately afterwards.

Brutal Difficulty

  • Whirlwind - Once Tristan reaches around 50% health, he shouts "Die... and stay dead!" and starts rapidly spinning with his sword, gaining movement speed and dealing massive damage in a large area around him and flipping players over his head if he hits them. This ability cannot be blocked by barrier spells (e.g. Ward of the Damned or Chaos Barrier) but its first hit can be blocked by counters (e.g. Blood Rite). He can use this ability multiple times per fight.

Strategy

Tristan is an incredibly dangerous boss that can often prove difficult for players to defeat. Fighting him frequently results in the entire road being covered in fire, making it difficult to deal damage to him without being set aflame. It is highly recommended to bring a counter or barrier spell (such as Blood Rite or Ward of the Damned) to block his Flaming Crossbow attack and prevent even more of the area from being set on fire. For the same reason, it is also important to fight him in large areas that will be harder for him to fully cover with fire. Narrow roads and bridges should be avoided at all costs.

His massive AoE fire damage makes minion builds less viable as a source of damage, however they can still distract him and cause him to use deadly abilities on them instead of the player. Ward of the Damned is incredibly effective at blocking his attacks while also creating such distractions. Failing that, Tristan is hostile to creatures and undead so luring him into a Treant, Stone Golem, or Corpse Pile can result in them fighting each other for a short time.

Flaming strike's overheard swing can be sidestepped if the player sees it coming but Icy swing's horizontal swing cannot.

Whirlwind is Tristan's most deadly attack on brutal difficulty, and can be very difficult to avoid unless the player is prepared for it. The best method to evading this attack is to fight Tristan near a large indestructible rock, tree, or pond that the player can kite him around until he finishes spinning. If this isn't an option then the player can Veil dash through Tristan to distract him with the afterimage, and then immediately shapeshift into wolf form and run away until his whirlwind effect expires. Tristan can also be distracted while using this attack and will waste it on local wildlife, undead, or summoned minions if they are closer to him than the player. His AI will sometimes become confused if a minion targeted by his whirlwind dies, and will waste the rest of its duration spinning on the location of the deceased minion.
